“The first step is always the hardest,” Gwen would often say. “Risk it and take the second step right away.”
“Why rush it?” I remember asking. “A little breather would be nice…”
But taking a breath, Gwen says, will ruin the momentum. “It’ll only give you a chance to quit.”
Whenever I think of my best friend, I remember this conversation. And each brave step I take breaks my heart anew.
Gwen has promised to watch over me, no matter what.
I often wonder how many steps will it take to know this for sure.
Heaven seems so far away.
